THE WITCH OF
THE WOODS

WHEN I SLEEP
MY SPIRIT SLIPS AWAY FROM MY BODY
AND DANCES WITH THE DEVIL

Little is known about Maud, who was executed at the Salem Witch Trials in 1693. She worked for a local family and was probably brought with them to Massachusetts. No other details of her personal life have been uncovered, but she was estimated to be between 17-20 when she died.Maud was reported to be “pious and kindhearted” prior to witchcraft accusations. However, the worship of false idols (mentioned in trial transcripts) suggests her faith differed from others. This may have played a role in her accusation, although her accuser only refers to her strange behaviour. Her “be’witched” behaviour included seizures, obsessive praying, and a defiant temperament.Following her death, Maud was buried in an unmarked grave. The exact site is unknown.
